SILMO 2009 - SUMMARY
11.10.2009 15:00 by SWV
The last Silmo has been held at the Parc des Exposition, Portes de Versailles Paris. Next year, Silmo moves to a modern exhibition hall to the north of Paris at Villepinte. Judging by the problems which were experienced by the organisers and the exhibitors alike – this move will probably be most welcome.
Silmo 2009 was a month earlier this year than usual. This meant that several companies did not have their sample collections ready in time for the show. More seriously however, the show clashed with both Ramadan and the Jewish New Year. This contributed significantly to the reduction in visitor numbers (down by over 20% year on year) although the organisers put the decrease in visitors down to the weak economic climate and the media hype about H1N1 virus commonly known as Swine Flu.
It is unfortunate that the last Silmo to be held at Porte de Versailles will be remembered not for the excellent business that was done, or the contacts that were made – but for the heat. It was so hot that many of the exhibitors could not work effectively. Many visitors were seen leaving before the afternoon when the heat became unbearable. SWV was informed that business had definitely been lost because of the overheated conditions.
In 2008, Silmo occupied Halls 1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and 3. This year, Hall 2.1 was not in use for Silmo. Comparing the floor plans year on year it can be seen that there were fewer exhibitors in Hall 2.2 (The Pacific Hall) and Hall 1 had many empty spaces, in places the width of the aisles was enormous and visitor seating areas, (which would have been unheard of 2 years ago) were readily available throughout the show ground.
The reaction to Silmo 2009 was mixed. Many companies who had pre-booked appointments were happy with the show. But it was generally agreed that the passing trade and general enquiries were not as good as usual.
Eco products and environmental awareness were one of the trends seen at the show. The Silmo d’Or which continues in strength, voted Linkskin as the winner in the sustainable development category “Environment” award and Hoya received a special mention for its contribution to sustainable development with Carl Zeiss also getting a special mention in the Environment-manufacturing process category.
Next year the date of Silmo will change again – moving to the following week, 23rd-26th September, which in 2010 will avoid the important dates in the Islamic and Jewish calendars
